How To Take Care Of Organic Garden ~ Gardening Tools            page #1/2

For anyone interested in gardening, the thrill of getting your hands dirty, smelling the fresh dirt and watching your carefully nurtured plants grow from seeds into proper bushes that produce flowers or veggies is the most important draw.

Different kinds of gardens require different kinds of garden tools. When gardening, it's a good idea to have good quality tools on hand. These will make the entire process faster and easier and leave you more time to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Do you have small garden or a large one? A small garden will not require the same large equipment that would be of use in an extensive one. A ride-on mower is unnecessary if you only have a small strip of lawn. Another point to consider is who does most of the gardening? Some tools are too heavy for use by women.

While many gardening tools are available, all you really need are the tools below. They will enable you to do most of your gardening chores.

  • Shovel & Spade :
A shovel is used for scooping loose materials, such as sand, while a spade is made for digging; but many stores use the terms interchangeably. Round Point Shovel is the most versatile and widely used shovel. Probably one of the most indispensable tools in the gardener's shed. Gardeners who have no other garden tools should at least have one of these types of shovels. Sharpened blade makes work easier.

  • Lawn Rake :
A lawn rake is a lightweight tool ideal for removing fall leaves, twigs, and other debris. A ground rake is used for smoothing new and existing beds. Lawn rakes come in a wide variety of sizes and designs. They may be constructed of bamboo, metal or plastic, and they may be fan shaped or rectangular.

  • Gardening Gloves :
Perhaps one of the most important gardening tools. Even if you're the kind of person who likes to get your hands dirty, there are times when gloves come in quite handy. Gloves protect hands from things like blackberry or rose thorns and your fingernails will stay much cleaner because of it. Cloth gloves are cheap and breathable and they wash well. For more protection from prickly plants, look for gloves with latex or rubber fingers and palms.

  • Weeder :
Weeders are great for weeding, breaking up the soil, and cultivating. A weeder could best be described as a wide screwdriver with a notch in the end. The fish-tail design allows the gardener to cut the long tap roots of weeds. These are also useful for weeding between stepping stones or in tight areas.

  • Garden Hoe :
Hoes are used to weed and groom the soil around shallow rooted plants. Useful to remove sod; weed beds; edge beds; dig planting holes. They can also be used to chop off annual weeds and plants at ground level or the pointed corners can be used as a light duty pick. A broad hoe moves soil, digs planting trenches, and weeds. A shuffle or action hoe skims just under the surface, slicing weed stems. A warren hoe works in tight areas.
