  • Cultivator :
A three pronged fork with a short wooden handle. The tool is helpful to dislodge weeds and to cultivate in narrow spaces between plants. Hand cultivators are essential for your 'sit down' weeding. They allow you to dig down and remove tap roots of perennial weeds without excessively disturbing the roots of surrounding plants.

  • Trowel :
Your trowel will become a constant companion at different times of the year. A trowel is a mini-spade, for planting annuals and perennials. These little shovels are invaluable during planting season, so find one which has the right 'feel' to it. You may wish to have a couple different trowels for different uses.

  • Folding Garden Bucket :
These handy buckets are ideal for working with in the garden or anywhere you need to be weeding and want somewhere to toss the weeds. This type of bucket is roomy, but lightweight and can simply be twisted and folded down to a light disc that takes up virtually no room in the gardening shed.

  • Garden Fork :
Use to break up hard or compacted soil. Also good for lifting out perennials and shrubs, taking just the plant without taking all the dirt. They are also invaluable in weeding large areas where there is no danger of injuring the roots of desirable plants. There are many sizes available, with long or short handles, different tine length, and number of tines.

  • Wheelbarrow :
A wheelbarrow or two-wheeled yard cart is for hauling leaves or soil. The two wheeled carts are much easier for most people to use, because they are lighter, and more of the load weight is supported by wheels. They are considerably more stable than single wheeled barrows, but not nearly as manoeuvrable. The sturdiest wheelbarrows are made of one piece of heavy steel with extra braces on the legs.

  • A Watering Can :
Is suited for watering jobs too small for a hose. Adjustable nozzles do everything from gently sprinkling new plants to delivering a hard stream for garden cleanup.

  • Aerator Shoes :
These aren't really shoes; they are actually spiked plates that strap onto your gardening shoes. As you move about, weeding, planting and trimming, the spikes drive into the earth with each step and help aerate it. This is just another way to improve the health of your garden without any extra work, something busy gardeners will appreciate.

Once you get in the spirit of gardening, you'll be amazed at how many different tools you can acquire to make your work in the garden easier and more enjoyable. If you take your gardening seriously, consider buying only the best tools. The money will be well spent in terms of how long the tools last. Gardening tools don't have to be expensive.
