<<< Interesting Articles ~ To Fertilize Or Not To Fertilize            page #2/2

Some common organic fertilizers that boost nutrient levels can be found not only in animal manure.

Below Is A List Of The Most Common Types Of Organic Fertilizers And How They Work.

  • Bone meal - promotes root growth because it is high in phosphate.

  • Calcified seaweed - raises soil pH and adds calcium.

  • Fish, bone and blood - are general fertilizers that are usually applied in the spring to encourage root and shoot growth.

  • Ground limestone - also raised pH and supplies calcium.

  • Gypsum - supplies calcium to the soil, without altering pH.

  • Hoof and Horn - slowly releases nitrogen.

  • Rock phosphate - addresses phosphate deficiency.

  • Seaweed meal - helps to increase humus levels in the soil.

  • Wood Ash - is rich in potassium.

Organic gardening Purists have always argued the subject of concentrated fertilizers. One side reasons that adding fertilizers to organic gardens is unnecessary if soil conditioning, planting, cultivation and crop rotation principles are adhered to.

The other side says that fertilizing will improve their crops, and staunchly use only products for fertilization that are organic in origin.
